Most tradespeople have snapped a screwdriver bit in an impact driver. It happens fast, often mid-fix, and usually at the worst possible moment. The issue is not that the bit was cheap. It is that a standard bit was never designed for how an impact driver actually works.

What makes an impact driver different from a drill driver
A cordless drill driver rotates the bit continuously and applies steady rotational torque. An impact driver does something different. It delivers very short, extremely fast bursts of rotational force, hundreds of times per minute, while also applying forward pressure to keep the bit in the screw head.
The technical term for each burst is an impact, and the measure of rotational force involved is Newton metres of torque. To put that in context: a strong adult arm can apply roughly 10 Newton metres of torque tightening a bolt by hand. A Milwaukee M18 FUEL impact driver delivers up to 305 Newton metres. That is roughly equivalent to 30 adults all wrenching on the same fastener simultaneously, in rapid pulses, many hundreds of times a minute.
Standard screwdriver bits are manufactured as rigid tools. They are designed to transmit force, not absorb it. Under sustained impact loading, the steel at the critical stress point, which is just behind the working tip, fatigues quickly and snaps.
The torsion zone: what Makita Impact Premier does differently
Makita Impact Premier bits incorporate a torsion zone between the hex drive shank and the working tip. This section of the bit is machined to a slightly different geometry, creating a controlled flex point that absorbs and disperses the rotational shock energy from each impact rather than concentrating it at the tip.
Think of it like the crumple zones built into a modern car. When impact energy arrives, you want it spread across a zone that can handle it, not focused at one weak point. The torsion zone on an Impact Premier bit does the same job for your screwdriving.
The result is a bit that deflects fractionally with each impact, stores a small amount of energy, and releases it smoothly into the fastener. This protects both the bit and the screw head from the cam-out and tip damage that shortens standard bits so quickly in impact driver use.
The steel matters too
Impact Premier bits are manufactured from S2 modified steel alloy, a specification common to quality impact accessories. The alloy is harder than standard chrome vanadium steel and heat-treated to maintain hardness through repeated thermal cycling, because high-speed impact driving generates significant heat at the tip. Bits that cannot handle that thermal load lose their edge geometry quickly and start to cam out.
The combination of the torsion zone geometry and the steel specification is what separates Impact Premier from a standard bit that happens to be labelled for impact use.
Which sizes matter most for UK construction
The UK construction market runs heavily on Pozidrive screws. If you are fixing decking boards, timber framing, carcass work, or plasterboard to timber, PZ2 is the workhorse size you reach for all day. For heavier structural fixings and chunky stainless screws in external joinery, PZ3 becomes the standard.
Phillips PH2 remains common in electrical accessories, HVAC fixings, and some fixings imported from European suppliers. Torx bits, particularly T25 and T30, appear across composite decking systems, structural timber connections, and vehicle body repair work.

Does it matter which impact driver you use them in?
Impact Premier bits fit any 1/4-inch hex chuck, which covers every cordless impact driver on the market. Makita designs Impact Premier for use with its LXT 18V and XGT 40V Max impact driver ranges, but the bits will work equally well in a Milwaukee, DeWalt, or Bosch impact driver. The torsion zone benefit applies regardless of which brand is turning the chuck.
What does change the calculus is the power level of the driver. A sub-compact impact driver operating at 100 Newton metres of torque puts far less stress through a bit than a full-size M18 FUEL or XGT unit operating at 250-plus Newton metres. At lower power levels, the difference between standard and impact-rated bits is real but less dramatic. At the high end of cordless power, where tradespeople spend most of their day, it becomes significant.
The on-site case for upgrading
The maths is straightforward. A set of standard screwdriver bits in an impact driver running all day typically lasts a few days before tips round and cam-out becomes a problem.
