The Builders Merchants Federation (BMF) has announced the shortlist for its inaugural Data Yard Excellence Award, a new category recognising suppliers judged to be leading the way on product data quality. Six building product suppliers have made the shortlist, with the winner set to be announced at the BMF Members' Day Awards Dinner in September.
Product data might sound like an unglamorous corner of the merchant world, but it has a direct effect on how quickly and accurately tradespeople and merchants can find, order and specify the right product. Incomplete or inconsistent supplier data (missing dimensions, wrong technical specs, poor imagery) slows down counter staff, causes wrong orders, and makes it harder for merchants to list products correctly online. A new award category focused specifically on data quality signals that the BMF sees this as a growing priority across the supply chain, likely tied to the wider push toward digital ordering and e-commerce across builders' merchants.
For tradespeople, the practical upside of better supplier data is fewer wrong deliveries, more accurate stock information, and merchant websites and apps that actually reflect what's on the shelf. It's a supply-chain story rather than a tool story, but one worth watching as merchants continue to digitise.
