Carhartt has introduced Sun Defender, a workwear range built specifically for UV protection, with a UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) rating of 40+ across the collection. A UPF 40+ garment blocks around 97-98% of UV radiation from reaching the skin underneath, which puts it well ahead of an untreated cotton T-shirt (typically UPF 5-15 depending on weave and colour).
Why UPF matters on top of general summer workwear
We've covered general summer heat-safety workwear before (see our earlier Carhartt summer workwear guide), but UPF rating is a distinct spec from breathability or moisture-wicking, and it's the one most tradespeople never check. Roofers, groundworkers, and anyone doing long outdoor stints, particularly through a UK heatwave, get cumulative UV exposure that a standard cotton or polyester work top does very little to block.
A UPF 40+ garment is a straightforward way to cut that exposure without changing how you work: no reapplication needed the way sunscreen requires, and it holds its rating through normal wear as long as the fabric isn't damaged or excessively faded.
What to check before buying

As with any PPE-adjacent purchase, UPF protection is a supplement to, not a replacement for, standard sun safety practice: shade breaks, hydration and site scheduling around peak UV hours.
