Mates in Mind has launched free digital suicide prevention training built specifically for sole traders and self-employed construction workers, released ahead of World Suicide Prevention Day on 10 September. The programme was developed in partnership with the Baton of Hope and funded by The Royal Foundation of The Prince and Princess of Wales.

What it is

The training is delivered digitally and can be completed on a phone or a laptop, in two modules covering suicide awareness and suicide prevention. There is no cost and no requirement to be attached to an employer's scheme, which is the point of it.

Why the delivery format is the story

Most construction mental health provision is routed through employers: a toolbox talk, a site induction module, an EAP line printed on the back of a card. That model reaches employed operatives on managed sites and misses the group that is statistically most exposed.

Roughly a third of the UK construction workforce is self-employed, and the sole trader working alone or in a two-man team has none of that infrastructure — no site induction, no HR function, no line manager noticing that something has changed. Mates in Mind's own research points to the pressures that group carries: heavy workloads, financial insecurity, poor work-life balance and supply problems, all of which land directly on one person with no organisational buffer.

Putting the training on a phone, free, with no employer gatekeeper, is a deliberate response to that gap. It can be done in a van at lunchtime, which is realistically when it will be done.

What it means practically

For a sole trader or small firm, this is a low-friction way to get some grounding in recognising warning signs and having a first conversation — the two things most people say they avoid because they are afraid of making it worse. For merchants, buying groups and trade bodies, it is something concrete to point customers at rather than a general appeal to look after your mates.

The training is available through the Mates in Mind website.

Watch for: completion figures and any follow-up evaluation, which will say more about whether digital self-serve training actually reaches this group than the launch coverage does.
